Join us for our teach-in, “What to the Colonized is Juneteenth?”, as we uncover the often-erased history behind this holiday. While Juneteenth commemorates the abolition of slavery, its full significance extends far beyond most mainstream narratives. Here, we will delve into the timeline of events from the onset of the Civil War to the collapse of the Confederacy while pulling on historical analysis from radical, Black scholar Gerald Horne.
During this teach-in, we’ll also examine the transition from chattel slavery to wage labor as a restructuring of Black working class oppression today. Together, we’ll develop ways to challenge the ongoing co-optation and commodification of Juneteenth through reconnecting this holiday to its historical significance in the active struggle for liberation of the masses of Black people—wherever we may find ourselves around the globe.
