We cannot underestimate the war that the U.S. state is waging across multiple terrains in an attempt to maintain the status quo among the masses. To wage this war, the state’s repressive apparatus unleashes violence and intimidation to uphold the power of the carceral system. To commemorate Black August, we gather to honor Reverend Joy Powell - a political prisoner, pastor, and activist against police brutality, violence, and oppression.
