This event will feature:
Professor Marie Ramos Rosado teaches Spanish and Latin-American/Caribbean Literature at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras campus in the General Studies Department. She is also a researcher, artist, dancer, radio programmer and cultural worker.
She has been a visiting professor to the Universite de Toulouse, Le Mirail, France to teach Spanish and Latin-American/Caribbean Literature. Her research endeavors have been in cultural studies, ethnicity, gender, race and class. She has published two books, La Mujer Negra en la Literatura Pueertorriquena: Cuentistica de los Sesenta, 1999 (Black Women in Puerto Rican Literature: Stort Stories of the 1970’s) and Destellos de la Negritud: Investigaciones Caribenas, 2011 (Reflections of Negritude: Caribbean Studies). This last publication received an award for Best Essay by the PEN Club of Puerto Rico and the Instituto de Literatura Puertorriquena, 2013.
She has been the recipient of multiple honors and acknowledgements by her peers, government officials and community. Among them are the following: Martin Luther King, Jr and Arturo Alfonso Schomburg Medal in 2020 for her defense of Human Rights in Puerto Rico. Plaque for Afro Forerunner in 2019 for defense of Afro-decedents. The Senate of Puerto Rico bestowed upon her a Proclamation for commitment to Civil and Human Rights in Puerto Rico in 2016. She received another Proclamation in the municipal town of Humacao in recognition of her contributions to the Arts and Dance. Acknowledgement and recognition as one of the Founders of the Festival of Bomba and Plena in 2016. A recipient of the Unesco Medal by the United Nations in 2002. Recognition for outstanding work in the promotion to advance the Arts and Humanities at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras campus in 2001. Received a plaque and resolution by the municipality of Ponce for her studies and research on literature by the 3rd International Book Fair in 1999. Acknowledge by her alma mater for writing the first book on Black Feminism in Puerto Rico and starting the pioneer undergraduate course at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras campus (ESPA-3017).
Dr. Ramos has many articles and research papers on literature, feminism, racism, folklore, music, politics and culture in general. You can find her literary production of books, magazines and newspapers at: Fempress, Marges 25, Homines, Onda Apretada, America, Cuadrivium, Latin Beat, Afrocaribe, El Post Antillano, etc. She has collaborated with authors on the following publications: Prologues in La Concepcionde la Mulata, 2008; Las Negras, 2012; Contrapunto de Genero, Raza y Clase; y Perfiles del Feminismo Iberoamericana, 200 Anos de Literatura y Periodismo. She was ex-Vice Presidente of PEN Club of Puerto Rico International.
